Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Vancouver

Often times, pelvic floor issues are ignored or thought to be untreatable. However, most issues can be treated or managed successfully by a physiotherapist.

What is the Pelvic Floor?

The pelvic floor consists of a group of muscles that serve important roles in supporting our internal organs, bladder and bowel continence, and sexual function.  They work together with the diaphragm, transverse abdominus, and multifidus, which together form the muscles of the deep core.  These muscles all work in coordination with one another to achieve proper control of pressure mechanics to allow us to have stability during daily tasks and exercises.  Like all muscles in our body, these muscles are susceptible to pain and dysfunction, such as weakness and overactivity.  The dysfunction can upset the balance of the deep core system, which may result in conditions like leaking urine with activity or organ prolapse.

Physiotherapists with specialized training in this area can assess the pelvic floor musculature function by testing for its tone, strength, and endurance.  They can also let you know how well your pelvic floor muscles are working with the rest of your body, and whether your muscles are over- or under-active, and provide treatment and guidance to put you back on track so you can continue to engage in the activities you enjoy.

What can I expect in the session?

The initial session is a 60-minute appointment that includes assessment and treatment.  The physiotherapist takes a detailed history of your present symptoms, conducts a physical assessment, and works with you to discuss an individualized treatment plan to achieve your goals.  The physical assessment involves an internal examination.

For females, it is a vaginal exam, but in some cases, a rectal exam may be needed.  For males, it is a rectal exam.  Understandably, the exam may be slightly uncomfortable, but no instruments are used, and we try to minimize the discomfort.  Treatment is tailored to each individual, with an emphasis on education and self-management, and a combination of manual techniques, exercise prescription, postural correction, and acupuncture if needed.  Follow-up sessions may be 30 or 60 minutes depending on your needs.

If you have any of the following problems, it could be related to pelvic floor dysfunction:

  • Lower back pain
  • Hip pain
  • Pain in the pelvic region (sacroiliac joint pain, pubic symphysis pain, tailbone pain)
  • Leaking with coughing, sneezing, lifting, exercising (Stress incontinence)
  • Increased frequency to urinate (urge incontinence)
  • Constipation
  • Diastasis rectus abdominus
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
